Selectors Consider Saransh Jain As Washington Sundar Faces Fitness Concerns Before Opener
Sundar's fitness concern prompts spin backup discussions.
India's squad selection for the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka has been complicated by multiple fitness concerns, with selectors awaiting updates on all-rounder Washington Sundar and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah before finalising the team. The Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee is expected to announce the squad on Tuesday, but injury-related uncertainties have forced the team management to consider alternative options, particularly in the spin department. Washington Sundar's availability remains a major concern for the selectors, with reports suggesting that the all-rounder may only be fully fit in time for the second Test.
The team management now faces a decision on whether to include him in the squad and wait for his recovery or select an additional spin option for the opening match. Sundar's ability to contribute with both bat and ball has made him an important part of India's Test plans, especially when balancing the playing XI. Senior fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is also expected to undergo a fitness assessment before the squad announcement. Bumrah had missed the final ODI against England at Lord's due to an impact injury, raising concerns over his availability for the red-ball series.
Given his importance to India's bowling attack, selectors are likely to take a cautious approach before making a final decision. The Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru has provided fitness updates on several players, with Harshit Rana and Nitish Kumar Reddy reportedly ruled out of contention for the Sri Lanka Test series. Both players suffered hamstring injuries at different stages and are currently undergoing rehabilitation programmes. Their absence further reduces India's options as the team looks to build depth ahead of upcoming assignments.

With Sundar potentially unavailable for the first Test, selectors are exploring additional spin-bowling options beyond established names such as Ravindra Jadeja, Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav. A BCCI source told PTI that if Sundar is not fit, the selectors will have to consider a fourth spin option to provide balance to the squad. The team management is particularly keen on having players who can contribute in multiple departments. One of the options being considered is Madhya Pradesh off-spinner Saransh Jain, who has impressed with both his bowling and batting performances.
Jain performed strongly during India's A series against Sri Lanka A, claiming six wickets across two matches and scoring an unbeaten 70. His ability to contribute with the bat could make him an attractive choice, especially considering India's preference for having depth in the lower middle order. The selectors may also consider wrist spinners Zeeshan Ansari and Vipraj Nigam, although there are reservations about Nigam's suitability for the longer format. Team management members reportedly believe Nigam's skills are currently better suited to white-ball cricket.
Saransh, meanwhile, could benefit from India's preference for players capable of extending the batting lineup. The selection meeting will also consider India's overall combination and the need to maintain a balanced squad for the Sri Lanka series. With injuries affecting several players, the selectors will have to carefully assess fitness reports while ensuring adequate cover in every department. The upcoming Tests will provide India with an opportunity to continue strengthening their red-ball setup, but the final squad could depend heavily on the fitness status of key players. The availability of Bumrah and Sundar, along with the emergence of backup options like Saransh Jain, will play a crucial role in shaping India's strategy for the series.
