“Security Threat Will Increase”: ICC Letter Fuels Bangladesh’s Refusal to Play in India

Bangladesh cites an ICC security warning over players, fans, and elections in a standoff over T20 World Cup venues.

Bangladesh government sports advisor Asif Nazrul claimed on Monday, January 12, 2026, that the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) security team has written to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) warning of increased security risks for the Bangladesh team during the T20 World Cup 2026 if certain conditions arise. The statement has further escalated the ongoing dispute over Bangladesh’s group-stage matches scheduled in India.

Nazrul alleged during a press conference that the ICC security team’s letter outlined three scenarios that could heighten threats: the inclusion of fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman in the Bangladesh squad, Bangladesh supporters wearing the national jersey in public while in India, and the timing of Bangladesh’s upcoming national elections. He used the purported letter to argue that Bangladesh is not in a position to safely play its matches in India.

The BCB has twice requested the ICC to relocate its four group-stage games—originally set in Kolkata and Mumbai—to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns. These requests followed the release of Mustafizur Rahman by IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders on the BCCI’s advice. The ICC has not officially confirmed or denied the existence of any such security letter and is expected to respond to the relocation plea between Monday and Tuesday.

The ICC is unlikely to approve a shift outside India and has proposed Chennai and Thiruvananthapuram as alternative venues within the host country. BCB president Aminul Islam previously indicated that Chennai was discussed but emphasized that any decision requires government consultation. The Bangladesh government has also sought direct assurances from Indian authorities on team safety ahead of the tournament, set to begin in early February 2026.
