Samson Breaks Virat Kohli's Long-Standing T20 World Cup Run Chase Record
Samson's match-winning knock surpasses Kohli's highest T20 World Cup chase score.
Sanju Samson delivered a match-winning unbeaten 97 to guide India into the T20 World Cup semi-finals with a five-wicket victory over the West Indies on Sunday. Chasing a challenging target of 196, India completed the pursuit in 19.2 overs, with Samson anchoring the innings under pressure. His composed yet aggressive knock not only sealed a crucial win but also etched his name into the record books with a landmark performance in a high-stakes encounter.
The wicketkeeper-batter’s innings helped India recover from a tense chase and maintain momentum in the tournament. Samson’s 50-ball effort, featuring 12 fours and four sixes, proved decisive as India reached the target with four balls to spare. The victory ensured India’s progression to the semi-finals and highlighted Samson’s ability to deliver in crunch situations after limited opportunities earlier in the competition.
With this innings, Samson surpassed Virat Kohli to register the highest individual score by an Indian in a successful T20 World Cup run chase. Kohli previously held the record with his unbeaten 82 against Australia in 2016 and Pakistan in 2022. Samson’s knock now stands as one of India’s most significant chasing performances in the tournament’s history.
Reflecting on his innings, Samson admitted that moments of doubt crossed his mind during the chase but said he consciously refocused on the present. He explained that whenever uncertainty crept in, he concentrated on watching the ball closely and reacting on merit, a mindset he credited for his success. The batter described the performance as one of the best moments of his career so far.
Samson also acknowledged the influence of senior players in shaping his approach to finishing games. He said years of observing greats such as Kohli, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni from close quarters had helped him understand match situations better. Despite not always being a regular in the playing XI, Samson noted that watching games from the dugout had been an important learning experience.
The innings now ranks among India’s top individual scores in T20 World Cup history, second only to Suresh Raina’s 101 against South Africa in 2010. With confidence high and momentum on their side, India will head into the semi-finals hoping Samson’s breakthrough performance marks the beginning of a strong finishing run in the tournament.
