Sam Curran Embraces Flexible Role After Star Performance in Sri Lanka Series
Sam Curran expresses happiness with his flexible all-round role in England's T20 setup ahead of the World Cup.
England all-rounder Sam Curran has expressed satisfaction with his adaptable role in the national T20 side, highlighting its importance as the team prepares for the upcoming T20 World Cup. Curran’s flexibility allows him to contribute effectively with both bat and ball, a factor that has become increasingly valuable in modern T20 cricket.
Curran’s impact was particularly evident during England’s recent 3–0 T20I series sweep over Sri Lanka. In the final match, he scored a composed 58 off 48 balls, helping England post a defendable total of 128 and earning the Player of the Match award. Earlier in the series, he played a key unbeaten 20-run knock and took a hat-trick in the opening game, showcasing his dual skills.
Reflecting on his evolving responsibilities, the 25-year-old said he is comfortable with a flexible role. “I know my role with the ball is going to be quite flexible, and I'm pretty happy with that,” Curran stated. He added that his aim is to contribute in whichever discipline is needed, saying, “When I don’t bowl well, I hope to bat well, and vice versa.”

Curran’s expanded role this season sees him often batting at No. 6, in addition to his established duties as a left-arm seamer. This development mirrors his growth as a cricketer since his T20 World Cup debut in 2022, when he was primarily used as a bowler. His evolution contributed to England’s successful 2022 campaign, where he was named Player of the Tournament.
Franchise cricket experience has sharpened both aspects of his game, allowing Curran to balance batting and bowling responsibilities with confidence. Statistically, he has scored 529 runs in 67 T20Is at an average of 19.59, with a strike rate above 130, while taking 60 wickets at an economy of 8.64. His recent hat-trick made him only the second England player to achieve the feat in T20Is.
As England fine-tunes its squad for the T20 World Cup, Curran’s adaptability remains a key asset. His ability to influence games in multiple roles gives the team tactical flexibility, making him one of the most crucial members of the squad heading into the global tournament.
