SA Great Urges Tendulkar To Mentor Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Amid Cricket And Studies Debate

Former South Africa batter Daryll Cullinan has urged caution over the rapid rise of 15-year-old Indian batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, warning that the teenager's extraordinary talent should not come at the cost of his childhood and overall development. Cullinan also suggested that someone like Sachin Tendulkar, who experienced similar fame at a young age, could play a valuable role in guiding the youngster through the pressures of elite cricket.

Sooryavanshi has emerged as one of the most talked-about young cricketers in the country after earning a place in India's T20I squad despite being only 15 years old. Although he is yet to make his international debut, growing public demand for his inclusion in the playing XI has intensified with every match. His selection has also placed the Indian team management, led by captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Gautam Gambhir, under increasing scrutiny, even as they continue to maintain that the teenager must wait patiently for his opportunity.

He stressed that the teenager is still at an age where most children are focused on school, examinations and neighbourhood cricket rather than carrying the expectations of one of the world's biggest sporting audiences.

"What we are seeing in Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is not simply a talented boy playing above his age. It is something cricket has genuinely never had to deal with before," Cullinan wrote. He said the combination of exceptional talent, the commercial scale of Indian cricket and the reach of social media has created an unprecedented environment for a player so young.

Emphasising the importance of protecting the youngster, Cullinan remarked that Sooryavanshi should ideally be "at home giving exams and playing gully cricket" rather than being exposed to the relentless scrutiny that accompanies international cricket and the Indian Premier League. He noted that while cricket has witnessed prodigies before, it has never seen a 15-year-old navigate such intense public attention in the era of digital media.

Cullinan observed that Sooryavanshi's life is unfolding at an extraordinary pace, with millions of fans analysing every performance and decision involving him. He warned that such an environment could affect not only the teenager's cricketing journey but also his personal growth, making it essential for those around him to prioritise his well-being over immediate success.

The former South African batter also pointed to the value of experienced mentors, particularly Sachin Tendulkar, who himself debuted for India as a teenager and understands the unique pressures of growing up in the public eye. Cullinan suggested that guidance from someone who successfully navigated similar expectations could prove invaluable in helping Sooryavanshi balance cricket with the challenges of adolescence.

While India's team management has reiterated that Sooryavanshi's development will be handled carefully, the debate surrounding his place in the national side continues to gather momentum. For Cullinan, however, the conversation extends beyond team selection.
