Rohit Sharma to Continue ODI Career After BCCI Talks: Report

Rohit Sharma is reportedly set to continue his ODI career for India in the upcoming West Indies series following discussions with officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The development comes amid uncertainty over the future of chief selector Ajit Agarkar, whose tenure is also under consideration. Agarkar has completed three years as chairman of the men's selection committee and is eligible for a one-year extension under the existing rules, but BCCI office-bearers are expected to discuss his future after India's two-match Test series in Sri Lanka.

The uncertainty surrounding Agarkar's position reportedly comes against the backdrop of differences between the selection committee and the BCCI's top leadership over Rohit's future in ODI cricket. According to a report by The Indian Express, the selectors had informed Rohit that the ODI series in England could mark the end of his international career in the format. Rohit, however, expressed his desire to continue playing ODI cricket. The selectors were reportedly keen to provide opportunities to younger players, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, as India begins preparations for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The situation gained further attention after BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia publicly responded to speculation surrounding Rohit's future. Saikia reportedly said that Rohit would continue representing India as long as he remained part of the team's plans. The remarks came a day after reports suggested that the Lord's ODI could be Rohit's final appearance for India in the format. The reported difference in approach between the selectors and the BCCI leadership added to uncertainty over how the veteran batter's ODI future would be handled.

Rohit subsequently responded strongly on the field, scoring a century in the third ODI against England. His performance strengthened the argument for retaining him, particularly as India looks ahead to the 2027 World Cup. The report said Rohit had also spoken with several BCCI officials during the England series and expressed his displeasure over the selectors' decision regarding his future. Following discussions with senior officials, the BCCI has reportedly asked the selection committee to evaluate Rohit's position on a series-by-series basis rather than taking an immediate decision on his ODI career.

For Agarkar, the uncertainty comes despite the selection committee overseeing a highly successful period in India's white-ball cricket. The team has enjoyed success across three consecutive ICC white-ball tournaments, which had initially strengthened expectations that Agarkar would remain in the position until the 2027 ODI World Cup. His continuation would provide stability to the selection process as India builds its squad for the next global 50-over tournament, but the reported disagreements surrounding Rohit's future have placed the issue of his extension under renewed scrutiny.

The BCCI is expected to hold a meeting after the ongoing two-match Test series in Sri Lanka to discuss Agarkar's extension and other selection-related matters.
