Rohit Sharma Honoured With Padma Shri By President Droupadi Murmu

Rohit Sharma receives Padma Shri from President Droupadi Murmu for sporting excellence.

Former India Cricket Captain Rohit Sharma was on Tuesday conferred the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honours, at the Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Droupadi Murmu presented the award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to Indian cricket.

Rohit attended the second phase of the ceremony along with his wife Ritika Sajdeh after missing the first investiture event held earlier in May. His recognition places him among several distinguished sportspersons honoured this year, including former tennis player Vijay Amritraj, who received the Padma Bhushan, and Indian women’s hockey team goalkeeper Savita Punia, who was also named among the Padma Shri awardees.

The honour marks a major milestone in Rohit Sharma’s nearly two-decade-long international career, during which he has established himself as one of India’s most accomplished batters and leaders across all formats of the game. Since his debut in 2007, he has played pivotal roles in several landmark victories for Indian cricket.

The Indian cricket team acknowledged the achievement on social media, posting visuals of the ceremony and describing the award as a prestigious recognition of one of the sport’s greats. Rohit, in a previous statement released when his award was announced, expressed gratitude to the Government of India and credited his family, coaches, and supporters for his journey in international cricket.

As captain, Rohit Sharma led India through a highly successful period in white-ball cricket, including ending the team’s ICC trophy drought with a T20 World Cup victory in 2024 against South Africa, followed by another major title win in the Champions Trophy the next year. These achievements cemented his reputation as one of India’s most successful limited-overs captains.

Individually, Rohit has compiled an impressive record across formats, including over 11,500 runs in ODIs with 33 centuries, more than 4,300 runs in Test cricket, and over 4,200 runs in T20 Internationals. While he has stepped away from Tests and T20Is, he continues to represent India in ODI cricket and remains an important figure in the national setup as the team builds towards future ICC tournaments.
