Rohit Sharma Defended Strongly Amid Fresh Debate Over Converting Starts Into Big Scores
Rohit Sharma earns support despite criticism over batting conversion record.
Team India will look to bounce back from a historic T20I series defeat against Ireland when they take on England in an upcoming white-ball series, with the ODI leg expected to play a crucial role in shaping the squad for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. After India suffered a 0-2 whitewash in Belfast—their first-ever defeat to Ireland across all formats—the focus has shifted to senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as selectors begin finalising long-term plans for the marquee tournament.
While Kohli missed the recent ODI series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury, his place in India's World Cup plans is widely considered secure because of his fitness and consistent performances. Rohit, meanwhile, has continued to contribute with composed innings despite stepping down as India's captain, although he has recently faced criticism for failing to convert promising starts into match-defining scores.
Former India wicketkeeper-batter Ambati Rayudu has thrown his weight behind Rohit, insisting the veteran opener remains indispensable to India's World Cup ambitions. Speaking on Sony Sports, Rayudu said Rohit's experience and leadership extend far beyond his batting. He expressed confidence that the selectors have already communicated a clear role to the 39-year-old and backed him to deliver when it matters most.

Rayudu argued that Rohit's influence in the dressing room is as valuable as his contributions on the field, particularly during high-pressure tournaments. He acknowledged that sustaining the same level of hunger over a lengthy international career can be challenging but said Rohit has repeatedly shown the ability to raise his game on the biggest occasions. According to Rayudu, the upcoming England series provides the ideal platform for the opener to reaffirm his credentials ahead of the World Cup.
The former batter also questioned the decision to leave Yashasvi Jaiswal out of the squad despite his impressive performances against Afghanistan, including two centuries. Rayudu maintained that both Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal deserve places in India's ODI World Cup plans, stressing that a successful campaign will require a blend of experienced leaders and emerging talent. With preparations for the 2027 World Cup gathering pace, the England series is expected to offer crucial answers about India's preferred combination and the roles of its senior stars.
