Rishabh Pant Steps Down As LSG Captain After Disappointing IPL 2026 Campaign

Rishabh Pant has stepped down as captain of Lucknow Super Giants following a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, with the franchise confirming that his request to relinquish leadership duties was accepted with immediate effect. The development comes after a poor season in which LSG finished at the bottom of the table, managing just four wins from 14 matches and accumulating eight points. The franchise’s struggles were compounded by inconsistency in both batting and bowling departments, leaving them unable to recover from early setbacks in the tournament.

Pant, who was acquired for a record ₹27 crore in the IPL 2025 auction, has endured an underwhelming run with the franchise over the past two seasons. Across IPL 2026, he scored 312 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 138.05—numbers that, while not disastrous in isolation, fell short of expectations given his reputation as one of India’s most explosive white-ball batters. In an official statement, LSG confirmed that Pant personally approached the management with the request to step down, and the franchise accepted his decision. Team director Tom Moody described the move as “never easy,” while emphasising that the focus now shifts toward rebuilding the squad and improving overall performance standards ahead of the next season.

Pant’s overall record as LSG captain reflects a difficult tenure. Over two seasons, he led the side to 10 wins against 18 defeats, a return that ultimately failed to translate into consistent playoff contention. His individual batting output during this period also dipped compared to his earlier career peak, with a cumulative 581 runs at a strike rate of 135.74. Despite the leadership setback, the franchise has not yet announced a successor. LSG’s statement indicated that the new captain will be named in due course, suggesting that internal evaluations are ongoing regarding long-term leadership options and squad direction.
