Records Don't Matter: Virat Kohli Explains Why Sachin Tendulkar Stands Alone

Virat Kohli has once again played down comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar, saying the former India batter’s impact on cricket cannot be measured through records or statistics. Kohli has been compared with Tendulkar for more than a decade as he continued to break major batting milestones, but he said his admiration for his childhood inspiration remains unchanged. “For me, Sachin paaji is always going to be Sachin paaji,” Kohli said, stressing that Tendulkar’s contribution to the game was much bigger than any numerical comparison.

Kohli said his respect for Tendulkar is rooted in the influence the former India captain had during his playing career. He also recalled the special place held by former India captain MS Dhoni, who was Kohli’s first captain at the international level. Kohli said such personal associations do not change with achievements and that he has never viewed himself as someone who has reached a point where there is nothing more to accomplish. His comments reflected his view that sporting careers should not simply be measured by where one player stands against another.

The India batter said remaining humble and continuing to prepare and perform were more important to him than proving he was better than anyone else. According to Kohli, Tendulkar “revolutionised the game” during his era, while the impact he left on generations of cricket fans and players cannot be reduced to numbers. Kohli said reaching a stage where a player considers himself better than everyone else could become the end of the competitive mindset required to continue improving.

Kohli’s remarks came after he reached another major milestone during India’s first ODI against the West Indies. He scored a century in the match and became the fastest batter to reach 15,000 ODI runs, achieving the mark in his 303rd innings. Tendulkar had reached the same milestone in 377 innings. Kohli has also moved past Tendulkar’s record for the most ODI centuries, adding another layer to the comparisons between the two Indian batting greats.

Despite the attention surrounding his records, Kohli said he does not view himself in the same way that supporters and the wider public do. He acknowledged the affection shown by fans but explained that people often form an image of a cricketer based on performances and what they see from a distance. Kohli said he understands where he has come from and continues to see himself as the same person he was before the achievements that have shaped his international career.

Kohli’s comments underline his continued admiration for Tendulkar even as his own career has produced several statistical milestones previously associated with the former India batter. Rather than treating those records as a basis for direct comparison, Kohli said Tendulkar’s influence belongs to a different dimension of the game. For Kohli, the legacy created by Tendulkar and the personal inspiration he provided remain separate from the numbers accumulated by either player.
