Rahane's Intervention Helped Yashasvi Jaiswal Avoid Four-Match Ban

Ajinkya Rahane has revealed that Yashasvi Jaiswal was facing the possibility of a four-match ban following a heated incident during the 2022 Duleep Trophy, and said his decision to send the young batter off the field may have protected his future. The incident, which took place during the match between South Zone and West Zone, became an important episode in the relationship between the two Mumbai cricketers. The controversy began when Jaiswal became involved in a heated exchange with South Zone batter Ravi Teja. The young batter was repeatedly warned by the umpire over his conduct but continued to engage in sledging while positioned at short leg.

Rahane, who was leading West Zone, initially intervened and attempted to speak to Jaiswal about the situation. When the youngster continued, Rahane decided that the best course of action was to remove him from the field and send him back to the dressing room. The decision may have appeared harsh at the time, particularly given the age and standing of the two players, but Rahane has now explained that he was attempting to prevent the situation from escalating further. According to the former India batter, Jaiswal was subsequently in danger of facing a much more serious disciplinary punishment.

Rahane said the referee was preparing to impose a four-match ban, a sanction that could have had a significant impact on Jaiswal's development. “Sledging happens in the game, and it should happen. It adds a bit of fun. I read the situation. I sensed at that point that it probably would have got out of hand,” Rahane told The Indian Express. He acknowledged that Jaiswal may have been upset by being sent off but said he was thinking about the potential consequences of allowing the confrontation to continue. Rahane's intervention, therefore, was not simply about maintaining discipline on the field but about preventing the youngster from facing a potentially damaging punishment.

Rahane further suggested that the consequences could have extended beyond the immediate tournament. The former India captain indicated that had Jaiswal remained involved in the incident and received the proposed punishment, his path towards representing India could have been affected. The incident also offers greater context to the relationship between the two Mumbai players. For several years, their equation has attracted attention because of the unusual circumstances surrounding the Duleep Trophy episode. Neither Rahane nor Jaiswal had publicly gone into much detail about what happened immediately afterwards, leaving the incident open to interpretation. Rahane's latest comments provide an explanation for why he acted so firmly despite the possibility of upsetting his younger teammate.
