R Ashwin Questions Timing of Debate Over Rohit Sharma's Future
R Ashwin questions timing of Rohit Sharma retirement speculation.
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has questioned the timing of the debate surrounding Rohit Sharma's ODI future, saying that if the selectors intended to move on from senior players ahead of the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, the decision should have been communicated much earlier. His remarks come amid widespread speculation that India's third ODI against England at Lord's could be Rohit Sharma's final appearance in the format. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly clarified that the veteran opener has not been informed of any such decision.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin stressed the importance of retaining experienced players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, particularly for India's upcoming tour of South Africa later this year. He said both players continue to bring immense value to the national team despite younger cricketers pushing for opportunities. While acknowledging the emergence of talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Ashwin maintained that experience remains crucial in high-pressure international contests and should not be overlooked.
Ashwin argued that if the team management and selectors believed Rohit and Kohli would not be part of India's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, they should have conveyed that decision immediately after the Champions Trophy rather than allowing uncertainty to continue. According to him, transparent communication is essential when dealing with senior cricketers who have served the country for many years. He said players deserve clarity about their future rather than learning about possible changes through speculation and media reports.

Reflecting on his own retirement from international cricket, Ashwin revealed that he accepted the decision after being informed directly by the team management that they wanted to move in a different direction. He acknowledged that such conversations are never easy but insisted they are necessary. Ashwin added that every cricketer can endure a poor series, and isolated performances should not become the sole basis for judging a player's long-term future without honest discussions.
The former off-spinner also questioned why the debate had intensified now, with the next ODI World Cup less than a year away. He pointed out that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have continued to contribute significantly for India, making the sudden speculation over their future difficult to understand. In his view, a transition plan should have been initiated much earlier if that was indeed the selectors' long-term strategy.
The comments come amid growing discussions about India's squad planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup as the team balances the experience of established stars with the rise of a new generation of players. While reports have suggested differing views regarding Rohit Sharma's future, the BCCI has denied claims that the Lord's ODI will mark the end of his international one-day career. Sunday's match against England is therefore expected to remain firmly focused on the series decider rather than retirement speculation.
