R Ashwin Joins Sydney Thunder as First Indian Cricketer in BBL
Veteran spinner signs post-IPL retirement, set to play second half of Australian league.
Ravichandran Ashwin has made history as the first major Indian cricketer to join the Big Bash League (BBL), signing with Sydney Thunder for the 2025-26 season. The 39-year-old off-spinner, who retired from the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this year, will be available for the second half of the BBL, running from December 14 to January 25. Ashwin’s move follows his retirement from international cricket during India’s tour of Australia in 2024, freeing him to participate in overseas T20 leagues.
Ashwin’s signing marks a significant milestone for the BBL, as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prohibits active Indian players from competing in foreign leagues while involved with the national team or IPL. Sydney Thunder general manager Trent Copeland hailed it as “arguably the biggest signing in BBL history,” emphasizing Ashwin’s status as an Indian cricket icon. With 537 Test wickets, Ashwin is India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the format, trailing only Anil Kumble’s 619. In the IPL, he claimed 187 wickets in 221 matches and contributed 833 runs, showcasing his all-round prowess.
The Thunder’s leadership impressed Ashwin with a clear vision for his role. “My conversations with the leadership were excellent, and we’re fully aligned on my role,” Ashwin told cricket.com.au. He expressed admiration for Thunder captain David Warner’s approach and eagerness to perform for the “Thunder Nation.” Copeland noted Ashwin’s desire to mentor young spinners Tanveer Sangha and Chris Green, inspired by Sam Billings’ positive impact as an overseas player last season. Ashwin’s commitment to leaving a lasting legacy resonated strongly with the club.

Ashwin, who has also entered the ILT20 auction concluding January 4, will join Thunder for the latter part of the BBL season. While India-born players like Unmukt Chand and Nikhil Chaudhary have previously played in the BBL after migrating overseas, Ashwin is the first Indian male cricketer of his stature to feature in the league. His signing is expected to boost the BBL’s global appeal as fans anticipate his spin wizardry Down Under.
