R Ashwin Backs Arjun Tendulkar For IPL 2026, Mentions Sachin Tendulkar’s Influence

Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin praised Arjun Tendulkar for his determination and composure following the youngster’s IPL 2026 debut for Lucknow Super Giants during their match against Punjab Kings on Saturday. Despite another disappointing outing for LSG, Arjun impressed with figures of 1/36 from his four overs and claimed the important wicket of Prabhsimran Singh.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin highlighted the challenges Arjun has faced throughout his cricketing journey, particularly because of constant comparisons with his father, legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar. Ashwin said Arjun’s mental strength and willingness to compete stood out more than his raw skillset, adding that the young pacer consistently responds positively under pressure situations.

“I won't talk about his skill. But his journey is not easy because he will always be compared to his father,” Ashwin said. He further praised Arjun’s work ethic and aggressive mindset on the field, noting that the left-arm pacer does not shy away from challenges even after being hit for boundaries. According to Ashwin, such fighting qualities are crucial for survival at the highest level of professional cricket.

Ashwin was particularly impressed with Arjun’s tactical awareness against Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh. He pointed to a sharp bodyline bouncer that forced a top edge and later a well-executed yorker that showed signs of reverse swing. The former off-spinner also referenced videos circulating on social media that showed Arjun extensively practising yorkers in the nets before the game.

The former India spinner admitted that he had earlier predicted Arjun would struggle to get opportunities this season because of the strong pace-bowling resources available in the LSG squad. However, Ashwin said injuries and inconsistent performances within the side opened the door for Arjun’s debut, which he believes the youngster utilised effectively.

Ashwin added that Arjun’s debut performance could now pave the way for more appearances later in the tournament. He said that although the circumstances surrounding LSG’s campaign were far from ideal, the outing against Punjab Kings demonstrated that Arjun possesses both the temperament and discipline needed to compete in the IPL.
