PSL Match Controversy: Umpires Penalize Lahore Qalandars For Alleged Ball-Tampering

Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Afridi, and Haris Rauf face PSL ball-tampering charges after penalty runs shift match outcome.

A major controversy has erupted in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) after Lahore Qalandars players, including Fakhar Zaman, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf, were allegedly involved in a ball-tampering incident during a high-stakes clash against Karachi Kings. The incident, which unfolded in the final over of Sunday’s match, has prompted disciplinary proceedings and widespread debate across the cricketing community.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Fakhar Zaman has been formally charged following the incident, though the batter has denied any wrongdoing. The charge was brought after umpires awarded Karachi Kings five penalty runs for deliberate ball alteration during a crucial stage of the game. Match referee Roshan Mahanama conducted an initial hearing, with a final verdict expected within 48 hours. If found guilty of a Level 3 offence, Fakhar could face a minimum one-match suspension.

The controversy arose when Lahore Qalandars were defending 14 runs in the final over, with Haris Rauf preparing to bowl. During a brief on-field discussion, Shaheen Afridi, Fakhar Zaman, and Rauf were seen handling the ball. On-field umpire Faisal Afridi subsequently inspected the ball and consulted with fellow umpire Sharfuddoula before determining that its condition had been unlawfully altered. The umpires imposed a five-run penalty and replaced the ball, leaving Karachi needing nine runs from six deliveries.

Despite the setback, Karachi Kings managed to secure a dramatic four-wicket victory in 19.3 overs. After Khushdil Shah was dismissed on the first ball of the final over, Rauf bowled a wide, shifting momentum further. Abbas Afridi then struck a boundary and a six to seal the win, capping a tense finish that has since been overshadowed by the controversy.

The incident has ignited debate over the consistency of umpiring decisions and the role of technology in identifying ball tampering. Critics argue that multiple players handled the ball during the innings, making it difficult to attribute deliberate alteration to a single individual. Supporters of Lahore Qalandars have questioned whether the available evidence justifies a Level 3 charge, calling for greater transparency in the adjudication process.

The PCB is expected to closely review broadcast footage and the match referee’s report before delivering its final decision. The case has drawn comparisons to the infamous 2018 Australian ball-tampering scandal, where players like David Warner and Steve Smith received lengthy bans. Whether similar disciplinary action will be taken in this instance remains to be seen, as the PSL faces renewed scrutiny over maintaining the integrity of the sport.
