PBKS Co-Owner's Year-Old Prediction About Shreyas Iyer Captaincy Proves Spectacularly Accurate
Shreyas Iyer appointed India captain; PBKS co-owner had predicted this.
Punjab Kings co-owner Ness Wadia has revealed that he predicted Shreyas Iyer would one day become India's captain during their very first in-person meeting, nearly a year before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) handed him the role. The revelation comes shortly after the national selectors appointed Iyer as India's captain, replacing T20 World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav in a move that surprised many observers.
Iyer's elevation to the leadership role marks a remarkable turnaround in his international career. After spending more than two years away from the national setup, the batter worked his way back into contention through consistent performances and strong leadership displays. His appointment was seen as recognition of both his batting ability and his growing reputation as a captain capable of guiding teams under pressure.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Wadia recalled meeting Iyer at his residence ahead of Punjab Kings' preparations for the IPL 2025 season. According to Wadia, the conversation lasted only a short time before he became convinced that Iyer possessed the qualities required to lead India. He said he told the cricketer within minutes of their meeting that he would eventually captain the national team and jokingly asked him to remember who had first made the prediction.

Wadia said Iyer appeared surprised by the remark and responded modestly at the time. The Punjab Kings executive praised the batter's personality, describing him as grounded, humble, and respectful away from the field. He added that Iyer transforms into a confident and intelligent leader during matches, combining strong tactical awareness with the ability to manage players effectively.
The confidence shown by Punjab Kings in Iyer was evident when the franchise secured his services for Rs 24.75 crore after he was released by Kolkata Knight Riders. Having already led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL 2024 title, Iyer continued to enhance his leadership credentials by guiding Punjab Kings to the IPL 2025 final, where the team finished runners-up after losing to Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Wadia also highlighted Iyer's calm and inclusive leadership style as one of his greatest strengths. According to him, the captain listens carefully to teammates, understands their individual strengths, and avoids placing excessive pressure on players during difficult situations. He said Iyer remains composed when mistakes occur and focuses on supporting his teammates, qualities that have earned him respect within dressing rooms and contributed to his rise as one of Indian cricket's most highly regarded leaders.
