Pathan Says Gambhir’s Management Deserves Credit For Persisting With Gaikwad
Irfan Pathan praises Gambhir’s management for backing Gaikwad, despite India’s second ODI loss to South Africa.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has praised the Gautam Gambhir-led team management for backing Ruturaj Gaikwad despite India’s loss in the second ODI against South Africa. Gaikwad, who struggled in the first match with just eight runs at Ranchi, responded with a commanding century in Raipur, highlighting the management’s decision to persist with him at the No. 4 position. Pathan emphasised on his YouTube channel that giving players time and trust is crucial for long-term success in international cricket.
Gaikwad’s innings of 105 runs off 83 balls was marked by elegant shot selection, sharp running between the wickets, and strong coordination with batting partner Virat Kohli. Entrusted with an unfamiliar middle-order role, the Chennai Super Kings captain silenced critics, proving his ability to adapt and perform under pressure. Pathan noted that such performances validate the selectors’ and management’s faith in players, reinforcing the importance of continuity in team strategy.
The former cricketer further stressed that consistent backing allows emerging talent to flourish. “Nothing happens in one match. The management deserves credit,” Pathan said, reflecting on how Gaikwad’s century was made possible by the decision to retain him despite his earlier failure. He added that Gaikwad’s effort also reassures the team and selectors that a player’s potential should not be judged solely on one poor outing.

While Gaikwad shone with the bat, India’s pace attack—comprising Prasidh Krishna, Harshit Rana, and Arshdeep Singh—struggled as South Africa successfully chased 359 runs. Pathan acknowledged the bowlers’ underwhelming performance but suggested that, like Gaikwad, young pacers also require patience, persistence, and opportunity to adjust and perform at the highest level. This approach, he argued, is vital for sustaining a strong and balanced team.
The upcoming third ODI in Visakhapatnam on Saturday will serve as the series decider, with India aiming to avoid consecutive ODI series defeats. With Gaikwad regaining confidence and Virat Kohli continuing in solid form, the management hopes to address both batting and bowling challenges. Pathan believes that trusting players in crucial positions will be key to India’s chances in the final match of the series.
Ultimately, the second ODI highlighted the significance of team management’s long-term vision. By backing Gaikwad, the Gambhir-led setup sent a message that players would be supported through ups and downs. Pathan concluded that such decisions not only benefit individual players but also strengthen the team’s morale and adaptability, providing a template for nurturing talent in future series.
