Pakistan Seek Batting Revival With Michael Smith Appointment Ahead Of England Test Tour

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed former South African domestic cricketer Michael Smith as the new batting coach of the men's national cricket team, handing him the responsibility of rebuilding a struggling batting unit that has repeatedly failed to deliver consistent performances in international cricket. The 46-year-old has signed a two-year contract and will work with the Pakistan side across all three formats — Test matches, One Day Internationals, and T20 Internationals. Smith's appointment comes ahead of Pakistan's three-match Test series against England, which begins on August 19. The timing of the move highlights the urgency surrounding Pakistan's batting concerns, particularly in the longest format.

The team has struggled to establish stability in recent Test campaigns, with collapses at crucial moments becoming a recurring issue. The PCB hopes that bringing in a specialist batting coach will help address technical flaws and improve the overall approach of the batting lineup. Before Smith's arrival, Pakistan had been operating without a full-time batting coach. Pakistan's struggles continued in the fourth innings as they attempted to chase a target of 211.
