Pakistan Duo Khurram, Abbas Penalised By ICC For Unacceptable Test Match Celebrations

Pakistan suffered another setback following their 90-run defeat against the West Indies in the first Test at Trinidad, as two of their fast bowlers, Khurram Shahzad and Mohammad Abbas, were sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for inappropriate celebrations during the match. The ICC took action against the players for conduct that was deemed unsporting during key moments of the Test. The disciplinary action came after Pakistan lost the opening Test on Tuesday. Chasing a target of 211 runs in the fourth innings, Pakistan were bowled out for just 120 runs, handing the West Indies a significant victory. The defeat added to the team’s disappointment, which was followed by the ICC penalties for the two pacers.

Khurram Shahzad was fined 15 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for his celebration after dismissing West Indies batter Shai Hope in the second innings. According to the ICC, Shahzad moved too close to Hope while celebrating the wicket, which was considered a breach of the governing body’s code of conduct regarding inappropriate behaviour during a match. Mohammad Abbas was also punished for his celebration after dismissing Jomel Warrican, the final wicket of the West Indies innings. Abbas had completed a five-wicket haul with that dismissal, but his overly animated reaction was considered inappropriate by match officials.

Unlike Shahzad, Abbas was not fined but received an official reprimand and one demerit point. The ICC confirmed that both players accepted the sanctions and admitted to their respective offences. "Both players admitted their offences and accepted the sanctions proposed by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, so there was no need for formal hearings," the ICC said in a statement. The incidents occurred during a closely fought Test match in which Pakistan’s bowlers had played a major role. Abbas was particularly impressive with the ball, finishing with a five-wicket haul in the West Indies’ second innings.

However, the strong bowling performance could not prevent Pakistan from suffering a defeat after their batting lineup struggled during the chase. The West Indies had set Pakistan a challenging target of 211 runs after taking control of crucial phases of the match. Pakistan’s batting collapse on the fourth day allowed the hosts to complete a memorable win and take an early advantage in the Test series. The ICC’s code of conduct regulations are designed to maintain discipline and sportsmanship among players during international matches. Demerit points accumulated by players can lead to further penalties if they collect multiple violations within a specified period.

For Pakistan, the focus now shifts towards the remaining matches of the series as they look to recover from the opening Test loss. The team management will also be keen to ensure that players maintain discipline on the field while continuing to deliver strong performances with both bat and ball. The sanctions against Shahzad and Abbas serve as a reminder that celebrations, especially in emotionally charged moments, must remain within the limits of acceptable conduct. While both bowlers played important roles in Pakistan’s bowling effort, their actions resulted in additional scrutiny following an already disappointing result for the team.
