Netherlands Opt To Bowl First Against India In Women's T20 World Cup Clash

India Women face Netherlands in T20 World Cup; aim for second straight win.

India began their Women's T20 World Cup 2026 campaign on a strong note as they faced the Netherlands in their second Group A match at Headingley in Leeds on Wednesday. After registering a convincing victory over Pakistan in their opening fixture, Harmanpreet Kaur's side entered the contest looking to secure a second consecutive win and strengthen their position in the group standings. The Netherlands, meanwhile, were aiming to recover from a narrow defeat against Bangladesh and keep their qualification hopes alive.

Netherlands captain Babette de Leede won the toss and elected to bowl first under overcast conditions at Headingley. The decision reflected the expectation of assistance for the seamers early in the innings. India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said her team welcomed the challenge of batting first despite the conditions and viewed it as an opportunity to test themselves and post a competitive total on the board.

India made two changes to their playing XI, bringing in Yastika Bhatia and Nandni Sharma in place of Bharti Fulmali and Arundhati Reddy. The batting lineup continued to be led by experienced opener Smriti Mandhana alongside Shafali Verma, while the middle order featured Jemimah Rodrigues, Harmanpreet Kaur and wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh. The bowling attack included key performers Deepti Sharma, Shreyanka Patil and Sree Charani.

The Indian side entered the match with considerable momentum following a dominant win over Pakistan. Smriti Mandhana had returned to form with a fluent half-century in that game, while Deepti Sharma delivered a match-winning bowling performance. India’s balanced combination of experienced batters and quality spin options has made them one of the tournament favourites, with the team seeking to maintain the high standards established in its opening fixture.

For the Netherlands, the contest represented another important step in their maiden Women's T20 World Cup campaign. Captain Babette de Leede remained the team's central figure after a fighting half-century against Bangladesh in their opening match. Although the Dutch side lacks the depth and experience of some of the tournament's established teams, they have shown resilience and determination, qualities they hoped would help them challenge a stronger Indian outfit.

Headingley has traditionally offered a balanced surface where early movement can assist fast bowlers before conditions become more favourable for batters. As the match progressed, attention remained focused on whether India's powerful batting lineup could capitalize after surviving the initial challenge, while the Netherlands sought to produce an upset result against one of the competition's strongest contenders. The outcome carried significant importance for both teams as the race for the knockout stages continued to take shape.
