Mohammad Mithun Receives Life Threats for Leading Cricketers' Boycott Against BCB Official
Mohammad Mithun gets life threats for leading boycott; BCB to investigate and provide security.
Senior Bangladesh cricketer Mohammad Mithun has revealed that he received life threats while leading protests by players against the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), following controversial remarks made by senior board official M. Najmul Islam. Mithun, who is the president of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), said the threats came amid an escalating standoff that disrupted domestic cricket schedules and drew national attention.
Speaking to Cricbuzz, Mithun said the threats were a first in his career and left him shaken. He stressed that he had never spoken against the country or used offensive language, maintaining that his statements were solely in the interest of cricket and players’ rights. Mithun questioned why advocating for players’ welfare should invite such extreme reactions, adding that no individual or institution is above the country.
Mithun disclosed that the threats were delivered through voice notes and calls, largely via WhatsApp. While he avoids answering calls from unknown numbers, he said messages are unavoidable due to his public role. He also claimed that other cricketers involved in the protest had received similar threats, though in varying forms, indicating a broader atmosphere of intimidation surrounding the issue.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and said it would investigate the matter. BCB director Iftekhar stated that the board’s security department had been instructed to assist Mithun and other affected players. He said the board was treating the issue with urgency and would look into both the threats and the claims made by protesting cricketers.
The protests were triggered by remarks from M. Najmul Islam, who allegedly labelled former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal an “Indian agent”. The comment followed Tamim’s call for dialogue between Indian and Bangladeshi cricket authorities after pacer Mustafizur Rahman was released from the Kolkata Knight Riders’ squad in the IPL. The remarks intensified tensions and led to a boycott that forced the postponement of Bangladesh Premier League and Dhaka League matches.
