Mohammad Kaif Backs Sarfaraz Khan, Dhruv Jurel Faces Axe For 1st Sri Lanka Test

Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has backed Sarfaraz Khan for a place in India's playing XI for the first Test against Sri Lanka, beginning August 15 in Galle. Sarfaraz was added to the squad after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out with an injury, and Kaif believes the middle-order batter could be particularly useful in the spin-friendly conditions expected at the Galle International Stadium. Sarfaraz has not played for India since 2024, but Kaif feels his ability against spin makes him a strong option for the opening Test.

Sarfaraz earned his India call-up after an impressive run in domestic cricket and made his Test debut in 2024. However, opportunities at the international level have been limited since then. With Sudharsan unavailable, India have another selection decision to make in the middle order ahead of the Sri Lanka series. Kaif believes this could provide Sarfaraz with an opportunity to return to the Test side and demonstrate that he remains capable of contributing at the highest level.
