Mikel Merino Calls Neutralising Messi a Huge Challenge For Spain
Merino calls containing Messi a huge World Cup final challenge.
Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino has described stopping Lionel Messi as a “huge challenge” ahead of Spain’s FIFA World Cup 2026 final against Argentina, as both teams prepare for a highly anticipated title clash in East Rutherford, New Jersey, United States. Defending champions Argentina booked their place in the final after defeating England 2-1 in the semi-finals, with captain Lionel Messi once again playing a decisive role by providing two assists. The 39-year-old has been one of the tournament’s standout performers, sharing the lead in the Golden Boot race with eight goals while continuing to influence Argentina’s biggest matches.
Speaking to reporters at Spain’s training base in East Hanover, New Jersey, Merino acknowledged the scale of the task facing La Roja against the reigning world champions. He said facing a player of Messi’s quality is an incredible motivation for both him and the Spanish squad, adding that competing against a team that has already lifted the World Cup makes the occasion even more special. Spain will be aiming to secure their second FIFA World Cup title after their historic triumph in South Africa in 2010.
Merino has emerged as one of Spain’s key impact players throughout the tournament despite often starting matches on the substitutes’ bench. The Arsenal midfielder scored decisive late winners against Portugal in the Round of 16 and Belgium in the quarter-finals, helping Spain progress to the final. Reflecting on his performances, Merino expressed confidence in his abilities and said he always believes he can make a positive contribution whenever called upon by the coaching staff.

Despite his important goals, the 30-year-old insisted that individual recognition is secondary to team success. He stressed that winning a major international title is a collective achievement shared by every player in the squad rather than only those in the starting lineup. According to Merino, the unity and depth within the Spanish camp have played a significant role in the team’s impressive run to the World Cup final.
Merino also praised teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, describing the 19-year-old as an exceptional talent ahead of his first-ever meeting with Messi on football’s biggest stage. The final is expected to showcase a symbolic battle between one of the greatest players in football history and one of the sport’s brightest young stars. Merino predicted an intense contest and said the referee would need to carefully manage the physical nature of the game by controlling challenges and fouls throughout the match.
Looking back on Spain’s only previous World Cup triumph in 2010, Merino admitted he does not have particularly vivid memories of that victory but remembers admiring the players who inspired an entire generation. He said representing Spain on the world stage now gives the current squad an opportunity to create similar memories for young football fans. Spain will hope to achieve that goal when they face Argentina in what promises to be one of the biggest matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026.
