Michael Bracewell Rejects Central Contract Deal; Shifts Focus To BBL And Home India T20Is

Bracewell signs casual NZC deal.

New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell has moved from a central contract to a casual contract for the 2026-27 season as he prepares to pursue an opportunity in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL). The 35-year-old remains available for New Zealand’s international white-ball commitments, including the upcoming five-match T20I series against India, and said he is eager to continue representing the Black Caps. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed the change on Monday, with Northern Districts batter Nick Kelly taking Bracewell’s place on the central contract list.

The move allows Bracewell to balance international cricket with franchise opportunities outside New Zealand. Centrally contracted players generally have commitments that can restrict their participation in overseas leagues, while the casual contract provides greater flexibility. Bracewell has increasingly established himself as a white-ball specialist and said the opportunity to play in the BBL was difficult to turn down at this stage of his career. He thanked NZC for supporting his decision and stressed that moving to a casual contract did not represent a withdrawal from international cricket.

“The backing from New Zealand Cricket for me to take this opportunity at this stage of my career means a lot,” Bracewell said. “As a white-ball only player, this felt like too good an opportunity to pass up. I’m still very much committed to the BLACKCAPS and can’t wait to be involved in the upcoming India tour and future white-ball series.” Bracewell also said he was targeting a place in the inaugural NZ20 competition, which is scheduled to be introduced from next summer.

Bracewell is expected to be part of New Zealand’s five-match T20I series against India, which begins on October 22. The series forms part of India’s full tour of New Zealand and will be followed by three ODIs and two Tests. Bracewell’s casual status therefore does not prevent him from being selected for the national side, although his availability for some future international fixtures could be affected by his BBL commitments. The BBL season runs through January, potentially overlapping with New Zealand’s home assignments against Sri Lanka early next year.

Bracewell is the sixth New Zealand player to opt for a casual contract for the 2026-27 season. Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne and Tim Seifert have also chosen the arrangement, allowing them to pursue opportunities in overseas T20 leagues while remaining available for New Zealand in agreed international windows. The growing number of casual contracts reflects the changing relationship between national-team commitments and the expanding global franchise cricket calendar.

With Bracewell moving out of the central contract group, NZC has promoted 33-year-old Nick Kelly to a full national contract for the first time. Kelly made his international debut in March 2025 and has since represented New Zealand in eight ODIs and seven T20Is, including two matches as captain against Bangladesh. Head coach Rob Walter praised his domestic consistency, experience and fielding ability, saying Kelly had earned the opportunity through his performances. Bracewell, meanwhile, will retain a role in New Zealand’s white-ball plans, beginning with the India T20Is, while pursuing the BBL opportunity that prompted his contract change.
