Manav Suthar Claims Maiden County Five-For, Finishes With Seven-Wicket Match Haul
Indian spinner impresses with match-winning display in county cricket.
India's emerging spin sensation Manav Suthar continued his impressive rise in red-ball cricket by claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in English county cricket while representing Warwickshire against Somerset in the County Championship. The young left-arm spinner finished with match figures of seven wickets, further strengthening his reputation as one of India's most promising long-format bowlers following his recent success at the international level.
Playing his second and final County Championship match for Warwickshire, Suthar delivered a standout performance in Somerset's second innings, returning figures of 5 for 100 from 46.5 overs. Combined with his first-innings figures of 2 for 50 in 18 overs, the spinner ended the match with a haul of seven wickets. The performance followed a successful county debut against Yorkshire, where he had claimed four wickets across the two innings.
Suthar arrived in England carrying significant momentum after a dream start to his Test career. Earlier this month, he made his international debut for India against Afghanistan and announced himself on the biggest stage with a remarkable 10-wicket match haul. His performances have already led many observers to identify him as a future frontline spinner for India in Test cricket, particularly as the national team prepares for a generational transition in its bowling attack.

In the ongoing match at Taunton, Somerset were bowled out for 208 in their first innings, with Warwickshire seamer Beau Webster starring with figures of 4 for 23. Suthar's two wickets in the innings came lower down the batting order. Warwickshire responded with 330 runs, and Suthar made a useful contribution with the bat, scoring 28 runs after registering scores of 33 and 37 in his previous county appearance.
Somerset showed greater resistance in their second innings, posting 435 after recovering from a difficult position. Suthar played a central role in Warwickshire's fightback, reducing Somerset to 148 for 6 with a series of crucial breakthroughs. His victims included Jordan Hermann, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and night-watchman Josh Shaw, as he consistently troubled the batters with his control, variation and ability to exploit conditions.
The spinner eventually completed his maiden five-wicket haul by cleaning up the tail, ending his short county stint with an impressive tally of 11 wickets from two matches. Warwickshire were left chasing 314 runs for victory and had reached 34 for 2 at the latest update. Regardless of the final result, Suthar's performances have provided another strong indication that he possesses the skill and temperament required to succeed both in county cricket and at the highest level of international cricket.
