Lovlina Skips Retirement, Sets Sights on LA 2028 Olympic Comeback!

Lovlina targets LA 2028 after Paris Olympics setback.

Indian boxing star Lovlina Borgohain revealed she had contemplated retiring after the Paris Olympics to focus on her newly established boxing academy in Guwahati, inaugurated in June. However, her quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Li Qian in the women’s 75kg division at the 2024 Paris Games prompted the 27-year-old to postpone retirement plans and target a second Olympic medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. “Had I won a medal there, that could have been my farewell,” Lovlina told PTI, expressing confidence in her ability to compete at the highest level, having previously defeated the Paris gold, silver, and bronze medallists.

The Assam-born athlete, a Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist and reigning 75kg world champion, is now preparing for her international comeback at the World Championships in Liverpool, starting September 4, 2025. Despite limited preparation—having competed in only one national-level tournament since Paris—Lovlina is focusing on enhancing her endurance and strength while studying her opponents.

This championship, the first under the new global governing body, World Boxing, introduces new weight categories, adding to the challenge. “I got only a month to prepare, so I have been working on endurance and also on strength,” she said, acknowledging the competitive shift with boxers adjusting to new divisions.

Lovlina, one of India’s most decorated boxers with an Olympic medal, multiple World and Asian Championships medals, and an Asian Games silver, remains driven by her passion for the sport. Her time away from the ring was spent establishing her academy, which she views as a way to give back to India. “There won’t just be one Lovlina from Assam but many,” she said, emphasizing her commitment to nurturing future talent.

With her sights set on Los Angeles 2028, Lovlina’s hunger for success and dedication to her legacy continue to inspire, both in and out of the ring.
