Leg-Spinner Alana King Returns with 3-14 Against West Indies Ahead of 2026 T20 WC

Alana King takes three wickets against West Indies, boosting 2026 T20 World Cup selection hopes.

Australian leg-spinner Alana King has made a compelling return to international T20 cricket, delivering a three-wicket haul against West Indies and reinforcing her credentials for inclusion in Australia’s squad for the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. King achieved figures of 3-14 in the opening match of the series in St Vincent, marking her first T20 International appearance in nearly a year.

King’s performance comes amid stiff competition among Australia’s spin bowlers, including captain Sophie Molineux and Georgia Wareham. Despite the depth of talent, King expressed cautious optimism about her World Cup prospects. “I’d love to [see four spinners], but I don’t think that’s going to be the case with the T20 World Cup. It’s all going to be conditions-based,” she told ICC. She added that her focus remains on performing well in the current series while making her case to selectors.

The 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in England from June 12 to July 5. Six-time champions Australia has been drawn in Group A alongside India, South Africa, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and the Netherlands. King’s recent performance could prove crucial as the selectors evaluate options for the tournament, particularly for spin-bowling roles in diverse conditions.

King’s T20I career has been marked by intermittent appearances since her debut in 2022. After initially becoming a regular, she spent nearly two years away from the side before returning in early 2025, playing five matches against England and New Zealand and claiming six wickets. Reflecting on her career, King credited her development to feedback from selectors and her experience with the Perth Scorchers, which helped her evolve into a versatile, three-phase bowler.

She emphasized her ambition to contribute beyond conventional middle-over bowling, stating, “It’s always nice to contribute to good wins and play a real versatile role. I’m trying not to be just a middle-overs bowler, especially in T20s.” Her recent display against the West Indies signals that she is ready to embrace a more prominent role if given the opportunity.

With the T20 World Cup approaching, King’s resurgence offers Australia an experienced, adaptable spinning option capable of impacting matches in critical moments. Selectors will likely weigh her recent performances heavily as they finalize a squad aimed at extending Australia’s dominance on the global stage.
