#JustIn: Shreyas Iyer Admitted to ICU in Sydney After Rib Injury Leads to Internal Bleeding

Shreyas Iyer suffers internal bleeding from a rib injury and is admitted to Sydney ICU; BCCI says he’s stable and recovering.

Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a Sydney hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after sustaining internal bleeding from a spleen laceration caused by a rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia on October 25, 2025. The injury occurred while Iyer executed a spectacular running catch to dismiss Alex Carey, sprinting backward from backward point. He immediately clutched his left rib area in pain and was escorted to the hospital after returning to the dressing room due to severe discomfort and irregular vital signs.

The BCCI confirmed that scans revealed a laceration to the spleen, with Iyer now under close observation by the board’s medical team and Sydney-based specialists. “He is medically stable and recovering well,” the statement read, adding that the Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to monitor daily progress.

A source told PTI that internal bleeding necessitated immediate ICU admission, with recovery expected to take two to seven days depending on infection control. “It could have been fatal,” the source noted, praising the medical staff’s swift response.

Iyer, recently appointed vice-captain for the ODI series under Shubman Gill, had shown resilience with a gritty half-century in the second ODI despite a modest start to the tour. His absence from batting in the series-deciding nine-wicket win—sealed by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s unbeaten centuries—now extends into an uncertain recovery period. Initially projected at three weeks, his return to competitive cricket faces further delay due to the internal injury.

The setback adds to Iyer’s injury-plagued recent history, including back surgery after spasms during the England Test series, a six-month red-ball break request, and loss of his BCCI central contract over domestic participation disputes. Despite these challenges, his consistent domestic performances earned him an ODI recall. The latest incident underscores ongoing concerns about workload management and physical durability in high-intensity international cricket.
