Jurel’s Century Sparks Fresh Batting Dilemma for Gambhir, Gill
Dhruv Jurel’s debut century fuels debate over India’s middle order, challenging Sudharsan and Kumar.
Dhruv Jurel’s stellar performance in India’s recent Test victory against the West Indies has sparked discussions about his potential as a pure batter in the national team, according to former cricketer Sadagoppan Ramesh. Jurel, standing in for injured wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, scored a commanding 125 in the first Test, finishing as India’s top run-scorer in a dominant innings-and-140-run win in October. His maiden Test century, featuring 15 fours and three sixes, has positioned him as a strong contender for a middle-order spot, even when Pant, sidelined by a fractured toe, returns to the lineup.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ramesh praised Jurel’s composure under pressure, noting that his performance against a relatively weak West Indies attack showcased his readiness to compete at the highest level. “Jurel has told the management that the competition isn’t between himself and Rishabh Pant,” Ramesh said. He suggested Jurel could challenge out-of-form batter B Sai Sudharsan for the No. 3 spot or vie for all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy’s place. This flexibility offers head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill a potential solution to India’s ongoing batting order dilemmas.
Sai Sudharsan’s struggles in Test cricket have intensified scrutiny on his position. The left-hander managed only 7 runs in the West Indies Test, continuing a lean run with just 147 runs across four tests at an average of 21. In contrast, Jurel’s aggressive century, alongside tonnes from opener KL Rahul and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, underscored India’s depth in batting talent. Ramesh highlighted that Jurel’s knock has shifted the narrative, positioning him as a viable middle-order batter independent of his wicketkeeping role.

As India prepares for the upcoming Test series, Jurel’s emergence adds complexity to selection decisions. With Pant’s return looming, Gambhir and Gill face the challenge of balancing established stars with promising talents like Jurel, whose form could reshape the team’s batting strategy. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) continues to monitor performances closely, aiming to build a robust squad ahead of key fixtures in the World Test Championship cycle.
