Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of Sri Lanka Tests With Knee Injury

India's preparations for the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka have suffered a major setback, with premier fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah set to miss at least the opening Test due to a knee injury. The 32-year-old pacer, who sustained the injury during the second One-Day International against England last month, has not recovered sufficiently despite undergoing rehabilitation. The first Test of the series is scheduled to begin in Galle on August 15, and Bumrah is now unlikely to regain match fitness in time.

When the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the Sri Lanka tour, Bumrah's inclusion was made subject to clearing a fitness assessment. With nearly four weeks available before the opening Test, team management had hoped the fast bowler would complete his rehabilitation and return to action. However, reports indicate that Bumrah experienced discomfort in his knee during the recovery process, delaying his planned return to bowling and extending his rehabilitation timeline.

Although there remains a possibility that Bumrah could recover in time for the second Test, the Indian team management is unlikely to rush his comeback. Having carefully managed the pacer's workload following previous injury setbacks, selectors and medical staff are expected to prioritise his long-term fitness over short-term availability. The latest setback means Bumrah may require at least a couple of additional weeks before resuming full-intensity bowling.

Bumrah's career has been punctuated by injury interruptions despite establishing himself as one of the world's leading fast bowlers. After recovering from a serious back injury that once threatened his career, India has adopted a cautious approach to managing his workload. Last year, he featured in only three of the five Test matches in England before returning to play the entire home Test series against the West Indies and South Africa.

His absence is expected to significantly affect India's chances in the World Test Championship campaign. India reportedly needs to win at least three of its remaining four Tests against Sri Lanka and New Zealand to remain in contention for a place in the World Test Championship final. Bumrah's ability to perform effectively across varying conditions has made him a crucial member of India's bowling attack, and his unavailability comes alongside concerns over the fitness of all-rounder Washington Sundar.

Without Bumrah, India's pace attack is likely to be led by Mohammed Siraj, with Prasidh Krishna expected to shoulder additional responsibility. While both bowlers possess international experience, neither has played significant Test cricket in Sri Lankan conditions. The team management will now have to reassess its bowling combination as it prepares for a challenging series, hoping its remaining fast bowlers can compensate for the absence of one of the world's premier Test pacers.
