Ireland's Arlene Kelly Announces Retirement From International Cricket

Ireland Women all-rounder Arlene Kelly has announced her retirement from international cricket after the team's third ODI against England Women. The 32-year-old brings an end to a career that saw her become one of Ireland's most dependable performers across formats. Kelly made her international debut in 2022 and went on to represent Ireland 110 times. Her decision comes after more than four years of international cricket, with the all-rounder now planning to return to New Zealand to spend more time with family and friends.

Kelly established herself primarily as a medium-pace swing bowler, earning a reputation for accuracy, consistency and composure under pressure. She finished her international career with 135 wickets, placing her third among Ireland Women's leading wicket-takers. Only Isobel Joyce and Laura Delany have taken more wickets for the team. Her best bowling performance came in a T20I against the Netherlands in 2023, when she claimed five wickets for 12 runs in an impressive spell.

The 2023 season was particularly successful for Kelly, as her performances earned her Cricket Ireland's Women's International Player of the Year award. She was also named the ICC Women's Player of the Month for August that year. Alongside her bowling contributions, Kelly made an impact with the bat, scoring 601 runs in white-ball international cricket. Her ability to contribute in multiple areas made her an important member of Ireland's squad.

Kelly was also given leadership responsibilities during her international career. In 2025, she captained Ireland in the absence of regular leaders Gaby Lewis and Orla Prendergast. Her leadership role added another dimension to her contribution, particularly within a developing Ireland side. Kelly said representing Ireland had been an absolute privilege and that she had made many memorable experiences both on and off the field during her time with the national team.

Ireland captain Gaby Lewis paid tribute to Kelly's influence within the squad, describing her as a special member of the team. Lewis highlighted the all-rounder's contributions both on and off the field and said she had been someone the players could consistently depend on. Her departure leaves Ireland without one of its experienced performers, particularly in the bowling department, where her accuracy and ability to handle pressure had made her a valuable option.

Ireland Women's head coach Lloyd Tennant also praised Kelly's reliability and influence on the team's development. He said her departure would be a significant loss to Irish cricket, pointing to her ability to perform in difficult situations and her contribution to the team's high-performance environment. Kelly's retirement closes a notable chapter in her international career, while Ireland will now look to develop new players capable of filling the role she leaves behind.
