IPL 2026 Rule Explained: Why LSG Didn’t Bowl Their Best Option In Super Over
IPL rules prevented LSG from using top bowler in Super Over.
Lucknow Super Giants were unable to deploy one of their most effective bowlers during the Super Over against Kolkata Knight Ridersin IPL 2026 due to a specific playing condition that restricts bowler eligibility once a player has been suspended for disciplinary reasons.
The high-pressure match between LSG and KKR ended in a tie after 20 overs, forcing a Super Over to determine the winner. However, when it came time to select a bowler for the one-over eliminator, LSG did not have the option to turn to one of their frontline choices, leading to questions among fans and analysts.
The reason lies in the IPL’s adherence to the official T20 playing conditions governed by the International Cricket Council (ICC). According to the rules, any player who is suspended during a match—most commonly for exceeding the allowed number of bouncers in an over—is immediately barred from bowling further in that innings. Crucially, this restriction also extends to the Super Over, which is treated as a continuation of the same match rather than a separate contest.

In this particular game, the LSG bowler in question had earlier been penalised for delivering too many short-pitched deliveries in a single over, leading to an automatic suspension from bowling for the remainder of the innings. As a result, even though he might have been the team’s most reliable option in a high-stakes scenario, the rules made him ineligible to participate as a bowler in the Super Over.
This regulation is designed to enforce discipline and ensure player safety, particularly in relation to dangerous bowling. While teams are allowed to freely choose their batters and bowlers for the Super Over, those selections must comply with any in-match suspensions or restrictions already in place.
The incident has sparked debate among fans, with some questioning whether such rules disadvantage teams in crucial moments. However, officials maintain that consistency in applying playing conditions is essential to preserving fairness and safety in the game. For LSG, the inability to use their preferred bowler ultimately proved costly, as KKR capitalised on the situation to secure a dramatic Super Over victory.
