India's 2027 World Cup Puzzle Features One Key Name Missing Against Afghanistan
Highly rated Indian player misses ongoing Afghanistan ODI series.
Former India batter WV Raman has said that a fully fit Hardik Pandya could become an “invaluable” asset for India in the 2027 ODI World Cup, highlighting his all-round abilities as a key factor that can provide balance and flexibility to the national side. Speaking to PTI Videos, Raman emphasised that Pandya’s value to the team lies in his dual role as a batter and a bowler who can potentially complete his full quota of 10 overs in ODI cricket. He noted that such a combination is rare and gives India tactical depth, especially in high-pressure global tournaments where squad balance often determines outcomes.
However, Raman also stressed that Pandya’s long-term role in the team will depend heavily on his fitness management. He pointed out that the all-rounder’s recurring injury concerns have already impacted selection decisions and availability, including his late withdrawal from the squad for the Afghanistan series due to fitness issues. According to Raman, consistent physical conditioning will be crucial if Pandya is to fulfil his potential in future ICC events.
The former cricketer further suggested that the Indian team management should use the next 12 to 15 months as a period of experimentation and role clarity. He said this phase should be used to identify combinations, test backups and ensure that each player understands their responsibilities well before the 2027 World Cup campaign begins.

Pandya’s importance to India’s white-ball setup has been a recurring theme in selection discussions, particularly because of his ability to contribute in both departments. When fully fit, he offers the team a balance that allows flexibility in team composition, enabling India to include additional batters or bowlers depending on match conditions.
Despite his recent injury setbacks, Pandya remains a central figure in India’s long-term ODI plans. Raman’s remarks underline the broader consensus within cricketing circles that while the all-rounder’s talent is unquestioned, his availability will ultimately determine how critical a role he can play in India’s pursuit of global success in 2027.
