India W vs England W T20I: Rodrigues, Nandani Shine as India Win by 38 Runs

India women beat England by 38 runs in the first T20I at Chelmsford.

India Women began their tour of England in dominant fashion with a comprehensive 38-run victory in the first T20 International at Chelmsford, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. The visitors produced a complete all-round performance, combining aggressive batting with disciplined bowling and sharp fielding to comfortably outplay the hosts in the series opener. The win provided India with early momentum in the tour and highlighted the depth and balance within the squad.

After being asked to bat first, India suffered an early setback when opener Smriti Mandhana was dismissed cheaply. However, Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues steadied the innings with a fluent partnership that shifted the momentum back in India’s favor. Yastika played an attacking knock of 54 runs off 40 deliveries, striking nine boundaries and a six while maintaining a brisk scoring rate. Her innings provided stability at the top and laid the foundation for a strong total.

Jemimah Rodrigues then took charge of the innings with a superbly crafted 69 from just 40 balls. The right-hander struck 10 boundaries and a six while rotating the strike effectively to keep the scoreboard moving throughout the middle overs. Rodrigues anchored the innings with maturity and aggression, ensuring India maintained pressure on the England bowlers. Deepti Sharma added valuable late runs with a quick cameo in the closing overs, helping India finish with an imposing total of 188 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs.

England’s bowling effort was led by Lauren Bell, who picked up three wickets for 34 runs in her four-over spell. Tilly Corteen-Coleman also impressed with disciplined bowling and important breakthroughs during the middle overs as England attempted to regain control. Despite pulling things back slightly towards the end of the innings, the hosts were left facing a challenging chase against a confident Indian bowling attack on a batting-friendly surface.

In reply, England lost early wickets after Indian pacer Kranti Gaud struck twice to dismiss Sophia Dunkley and Alice Capsey. England wicketkeeper-batter Amy Jones attempted to keep the chase alive with a fighting innings of 67 runs from 48 deliveries, including seven boundaries. Former captain Heather Knight contributed 21 runs, but regular wickets at the other end prevented England from building sustained partnerships required to challenge India’s target.

The turning point of the match came through an excellent spell from Nandani Sharma, who finished with impressive figures of 3 for 23. She removed key middle-order batters at crucial moments and triggered a collapse that effectively ended England’s hopes of a comeback. Deepti Sharma chipped in with an important wicket, while Kranti Gaud maintained pressure in the death overs with disciplined bowling. Apart from Amy Jones, England’s batting lineup struggled to find rhythm as India sealed a convincing victory to take control of the series heading into the second T20I.
