India will face Afghanistan in a three-match T20I series in Delhi ahead of the Asian Games 2026. Led by Shreyas Iyer, the series will provide India with an opportunity to fine-tune its preparations for the upcoming continental event. The contest will also draw attention to the selection battle between teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and experienced wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson.
Sooryavanshi was preferred over Samson in India’s playing XI during the England series, although the 15-year-old eventually made way for his senior counterpart’s return in the final match. The Afghanistan series could therefore provide another opportunity for the team management to assess its options ahead of the Asian Games. With Iyer leading the side, the three matches are expected to be closely watched as India works on its combination and roles.
Afghanistan will officially host India in a bilateral series for the first time, although the matches will be played in Delhi. The administrative hosting arrangement adds significance to the series, given the competitive encounters the two teams have produced in recent Asia Cups and World Cups. India also hosted Afghanistan in a bilateral series two years ago, with the Bengaluru T20I producing a memorable double Super Over.

The three-match series will begin on September 13 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, with the match scheduled to start at 7:30 PM IST. The second T20I will be played at the same venue on September 15, also from 7:30 PM IST. The series will conclude with the third T20I on September 17 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, with the match scheduled for a 7:30 PM IST start.
India have a dominant record against Afghanistan in T20I cricket, winning eight of the nine meetings between the teams. The remaining encounter ended without a result, meaning Afghanistan are still searching for their first T20I victory over India. The upcoming series will therefore present Afghanistan with another chance to challenge India while the hosts look to maintain their strong record.
The India vs Afghanistan T20I series will be televised live on the Sony Sports Network, while DD Sports will provide a free live telecast of the matches.
