India vs Afghanistan Day 1: Sai Sudharsan’s Fifty Puts India In Total Control

India dominate Day 1 with strong batting partnership.

India made a strong start on Day 1 of the one-off Test match against Afghanistan in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, with the top order laying a solid foundation after being asked to bat first. India captain Shubman Gill won the toss and opted to bat, setting the tone for the opening day of the contest. The match comes shortly after the conclusion of the IPL 2026 final, adding further interest to the transition into international red-ball cricket.

India’s innings began with early movement in the bowling before the first breakthrough saw Yashasvi Jaiswal dismissed for 24 by Saleem Safi. However, the setback did little to slow India’s momentum as KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan came together to stabilise the innings. At lunch, India were comfortably placed at 96/1, with the duo building a strong partnership and keeping the scoreboard moving steadily.

Sai Sudharsan, playing in a crucial top-order role at No. 3, looked in impressive touch as he brought up his half-century in style, striking a series of boundaries that included consecutive fours. His composed yet aggressive approach helped India maintain control, while KL Rahul provided steady support at the other end, ensuring Afghanistan’s bowlers were kept under pressure throughout the session.

The match also marked significant debut moments for both teams. India handed a Test debut to spinner Manav Suthar, while wicketkeeper-batters Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel were included in the playing XI, strengthening the team’s depth. For Afghanistan, spinner Nangeyalia Kharote received his maiden Test cap, adding a fresh face to their bowling attack as they looked to challenge India’s batting line-up.

Afghanistan’s bowlers struggled to break the growing partnership between Rahul and Sudharsan after the early wicket. Despite some disciplined spells and attempts to create pressure through spin and pace variations, India’s batting pair remained composed, rotating strike effectively and punishing loose deliveries. The Indian team appeared in control as the session progressed, steadily building towards a dominant position.

As the Test match continues, India will look to convert their strong start into a big first-innings total, while Afghanistan will aim to break the partnership quickly and claw their way back into the contest. With both teams featuring debutants and a mix of experienced players, the one-off Test promises an interesting battle over the coming days.
