India Skipper Shubman Gill Hints at Multiple Adjustments After 1-2 ODI Series Defeat to New Zealand
India captain Shubman Gill indicates team tweaks and more game time for Nitish Kumar Reddy to test combinations ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
India captain Shubman Gill hinted at “multiple changes” in the team’s approach and combinations following a disappointing 41-run defeat against New Zealand in the third and final ODI on Sunday, a result that handed the visitors a historic 2–1 series win on Indian soil.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a challenging 337 for 8, with Daryl Mitchell continuing his outstanding form by scoring yet another century. India’s chase was anchored by Virat Kohli, who struck his 85th international hundred, but a lack of support from the rest of the batting line-up saw the hosts bowled out for 296, falling short of the target despite a strong start.
Speaking after the match, Gill admitted that the team’s performance in the decider was below expectations, especially after levelling the series in the second ODI. He said the defeat offered important lessons and underlined the need for reflection and improvement in certain areas. Gill, however, praised Kohli’s consistency and highlighted the positive contributions of Harshit, who impressed while batting at No. 8, as well as the fast bowlers, whom he felt performed well throughout the series.

Looking ahead, Gill indicated that India’s planning is already aligned with the 2027 ODI World Cup, suggesting that experimentation and player development will be key in the coming months. He specifically mentioned all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, saying the team wants to give him more opportunities and overs to assess the best combinations and understand what roles suit him most effectively.
Gill’s remarks came shortly after assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate acknowledged that Nitish had limited opportunities to make an impact in the series. The comments point towards potential changes in team balance as India looks to build depth and flexibility ahead of major tournaments.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell was named Player of the Series for his scores of 84, 131 not out, and 137. Mitchell said staying focused on the present and building partnerships played a crucial role in the team’s success, describing the series win in India as a special achievement for the side.
