India Prioritises Proven Performers Over Record-Breaking Young Talent In T20 Squad
India benches teenage prospect Sooryavanshi to back established T20 squad performers.
Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was left out of India's playing XI for the opening T20 International against Ireland despite earning his maiden senior national team call-up for the two-match series. The 15-year-old had generated significant excitement after being included in the squad and impressed during training sessions ahead of the match, where he was seen interacting with head coach Gautam Gambhir and the support staff. Had he made his debut, Sooryavanshi would have become the youngest player to represent India in international cricket at just 15 years and 91 days.
India captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed at the toss that Sooryavanshi had not been selected for the first match, explaining that the team preferred to continue backing players who have consistently performed at the international level. "Unfortunately no. He's a gun player but we have some tremendous players who have done well for us, so we are backing them. He will get his chance when the time comes," Iyer said after opting to bowl first. India's established top order featuring Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan made it difficult for the selectors and team management to accommodate another batter without dropping an in-form player.
Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had also addressed the youngster's selection prospects on the eve of the match, stressing that opportunities should be earned without being unfair to players already delivering results. He said Sooryavanshi's time would come but insisted the management could not overlook cricketers who have been scoring runs and helping India win matches. Kotak added that there is a fine balance between nurturing emerging talent and maintaining faith in performers who have justified their place in the side.

The decision highlights the depth of India's batting resources, with competition for places remaining intense even for highly-rated young talents. Sooryavanshi's inclusion in the squad is widely viewed as recognition of his immense potential, and the management has indicated that his international debut is a matter of when, not if. For now, India has chosen continuity and experience as it begins the Ireland series, while the teenager continues to wait for an opportunity to create history in the national colours.
