India Opener Abhishek Sharma Undergoes Treatment; Availability vs Namibia in Doubt

Abhishek Sharma’s stomach infection sees him hospitalised and doubtful for India’s T20 World Cup Namibia match.

Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has been hospitalised and is currently doubtful for India’s upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 group‑stage match against Namibia on February 12, 2026, after suffering illness during the tournament, according to multiple reports.

Sharma, a key top‑order batter for India, was reportedly taken to hospital after developing a stomach infection and ongoing health issues, raising concerns about his availability for the crucial fixture at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. He had already been unwell during India’s opening victory over the USA and missed parts of that match because of his condition.

On Tuesday, India’s practice session saw Sharma sitting out, with assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirming he had not yet recovered from his illness as the squad continued preparations. His absence from training has cast further doubt over whether he will be fit in time for the Namibia game.

Sharma had featured in India’s first game but was not fielded in the latter stages after being dismissed for a golden duck, and reports suggest the illness may have affected his performance. Meanwhile, other players such as Washington Sundar have begun training with the team, and Jasprit Bumrah has returned to full bowling fitness after his own recent bout of illness.

With team management cautious about rushing his return, Sharma’s place in the playing XI remains uncertain, and selectors are considering backups like Sanju Samson if Sharma is ruled out. The final team for the Namibia match is expected to be confirmed closer to game time.

India’s next match against Namibia is part of a packed World Cup schedule, and fitness updates on Sharma will be closely watched by fans and selectors alike as the team balances player health with competitive priorities.
