India Face Oman In Final Group Match Before Super 4s Clash

Suryakumar Yadav’s India seeks batting practice against Oman ahead of the Pakistan rematch.

India, led by Suryakumar Yadav, will aim to maximise batting practice in their final Asia Cup group stage match against Oman in Abu Dhabi on Friday, having already secured a Super 4s berth. With a crucial rematch against Pakistan looming on Sunday, the lopsided low-scoring chases in their first two games—against Hong Kong and Nepal—make this an ideal chance to give key batters like Shubman Gill, Tilak Varma, and middle-order players Hardik Pandya, Sanju Samson, and Shivam Dube extended time at the crease. India’s preference to bat first at Sheikh Zayed Stadium reflects a strategy to build momentum before the tournament’s intense phase, which could involve four matches in seven days if they reach the final.

India’s formidable bowling attack, spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, and Varun Chakravarthy, poses a daunting challenge for Oman, whose batting has struggled, managing totals of just 67 against Pakistan and 130 against UAE, with no player exceeding 30 runs. Head coach Gautam Gambhir may opt for minimal experimentation, potentially resting Bumrah to preserve the pace spearhead for the Super 4s, giving Arshdeep Singh or Harshit Rana a chance to shine. Suryakumar could also tweak the batting order to test combinations, leveraging the relatively low-pressure contest to assess bench strength.

The match, India’s only one at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, comes with logistical considerations, as the team has chosen to skip training in Abu Dhabi due to the four-hour round-trip bus journey from Dubai. Instead, they will travel on match day, play the 8 p.m. IST fixture, and return immediately, conserving energy for the Pakistan clash. The pitch, known for assisting spinners but offering early pace, remains an unknown factor, though India’s balanced squad is well-equipped to adapt.

Off the field, the team seeks to move past controversy surrounding their decision not to shake hands with Pakistan players after their last match, a gesture protesting the killing of 26 Indian tourists in a Pahalgam terror attack. With a squad blending youth and experience—featuring Abhishek Sharma’s explosive starts and Axar Patel’s all-round reliability—India aims to use this game to sharpen their form, setting the stage for a high-stakes Super 4s campaign in a tournament critical to regional cricket supremacy.
