Gambhir Praises Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill; Calls Rohit-Kohli Stand “Outstanding”

Gautam Gambhir praised Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill for their strong start, later hailing Rohit-Virat’s unbeaten 168-run partnership.

India head coach Gautam Gambhir lauded the batting unit in the dressing room after the team’s series-levelling victory in the third ODI against Australia on Saturday, singling out crucial partnerships that powered the chase of 237. Gambhir highlighted the 69-run opening stand between captain Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill as “very, very important” in setting the tone. He then praised the unbeaten 168-run second-wicket partnership between Rohit and Virat Kohli as “outstanding”, with special mention for Rohit’s century and the duo’s clinical finish.

In a video shared by the BCCI, Gambhir emphasised the psychological boost of senior players sealing the win while remaining not out. “The most important thing was that you finished it off, and Virat as well,” he told the team. Rohit, named Player of the Series for his consistent contributions across the three matches, scored an unbeaten 100, while Kohli contributed a composed 74 not out after registering ducks in the first two ODIs. Their partnership silenced recent debates over form and selection.

The victory prevented a series whitewash and marked a fitting end to what Rohit hinted may be his and Kohli’s final tour of Australia. With the home series against South Africa next, both veterans aim to maintain peak fitness and form. Gambhir’s remarks underscored the value of experience in high-pressure chases, reinforcing confidence within the squad.

The result highlighted India’s resilience despite earlier setbacks, with the Rohit-Kohli alliance proving decisive once again. As the team returns home, focus shifts to sustaining momentum in the 50-over format ahead of future global events. Rohit and Kohli’s vintage display served as a reminder of their enduring class on the international stage.
