India Clinch Asian Games Cricket Gold
India defeated Pakistan by 19 runs in the men’s cricket final at the 2026 Asian Games on Saturday, successfully defending the gold medal they won in the previous edition. Chasing a target of 212, Pakistan finished on 192, despite a superb 96 off 51 balls from Hasan Nawaz. Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Shivam Dube claimed two wickets each for India as the defending champions held their nerve in the closing stages. The victory also earned India its 19th gold medal of the ongoing Asian Games. India had earlier posted a commanding 211/6 in 20 overs after being sent into bat.
Opener Abhishek Sharma provided the initial momentum with a blistering 61 off just 28 deliveries, giving India a strong start in the final. Tilak Varma then produced a crucial unbeaten 51 from 22 balls, while Shivam Dube contributed 27 off 14 deliveries. Their aggressive batting ensured India crossed the 200-run mark and set Pakistan a demanding target in the high-profile final. Pakistan began the chase with the task of maintaining a steep required run rate, but Hasan Nawaz kept the team in contention with an attacking innings. His 96 off 51 balls included a sustained assault on the Indian bowlers and gave Pakistan hope of completing what would have been a record chase.
However, wickets at regular intervals prevented Pakistan from building a partnership capable of taking the game away from India. Once Hasan was dismissed, Pakistan's hopes of reaching the target diminished significantly. India’s bowling attack eventually closed out the match through a collective effort. Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Shivam Dube picked up two wickets apiece, breaking key partnerships during Pakistan’s pursuit. The Indian bowlers also managed to restrict the scoring during the decisive stages of the innings, ensuring that Pakistan could not maintain the momentum generated by Hasan’s innings.
