India A Post 349 But Afghanistan A Chase 294 In Rain-Hit Tri-Series Clash
Rain revised Afghanistan A's target after India A posted 349.
India A posted a commanding 349 for 9 against Afghanistan A in the second match of the Tri-Nation A Series, powered by strong contributions from their top and middle order. However, rain interruptions and a wet outfield significantly altered the contest, resulting in a revised target for Afghanistan A under the match regulations. The game was initially reduced to 49 overs per side after rain delayed proceedings during India A’s innings.
Taking advantage of favorable batting conditions, India A piled up 349 runs, with Prabhsimran Singh leading the charge with 84 runs. Young opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi provided an explosive start, scoring 44 off just 22 balls, while captain Tilak Varma and Ruturaj Gaikwad added stability through well-crafted knocks of 66 each. A late flourish from Suryansh Shedge, who struck a quick-fire 40, helped India A finish with an imposing total.
However, a second weather-related delay before Afghanistan A’s chase forced officials to reduce the innings further. Due to the wet outfield and lost playing time, the target was recalculated using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method. Instead of chasing the original 350-run target, Afghanistan A were set a revised target of 294 runs from 38 overs.

The revised equation meant Afghanistan A required a scoring rate of around 7.74 runs per over from the outset. Despite the challenging target, the Afghan openers responded positively and got off to a brisk start, taking advantage of the fielding restrictions and putting pressure back on the Indian bowlers. The match also marked a notable outing for 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who bounced back after a modest performance in India A’s previous game against Sri Lanka A.
His aggressive innings at the top of the order provided momentum and laid the foundation for India A’s large total. The reason Afghanistan A are chasing 294 instead of 350 is therefore entirely due to the DLS adjustment following rain delays and the reduction of their innings to 38 overs. While India A's score remains 349 for 9, the revised target reflects the fewer overs available to Afghanistan A rather than any change to India A’s total.
