IND vs ENG 1st ODI: England All Out For 258, India's Turn Now

England bowled out for 258, India begin chase in Birmingham.

England were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs against India in the opening match of the three-match ODI series at Edgbaston on Tuesday, setting the visitors a target of 259 runs for victory. After being asked to field first, India produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict the hosts despite a few useful partnerships in the middle overs. The visitors now require 259 runs from 50 overs at a required run rate of 5.18 to take a 1-0 lead in the series.

India's bowlers shared the wickets, with Gurnoor Brar and Prasidh Krishna claiming two wickets each. Jasprit Bumrah and Shivam Dube also chipped in with one wicket apiece, while Axar Patel removed Jofra Archer during the latter stages of the innings. The bowling unit maintained pressure throughout the innings, regularly breaking partnerships and preventing England from posting a more imposing total despite batting-friendly conditions.

England captain Harry Brook had earlier won the toss and elected to bat first. The hosts looked to build a competitive score but were unable to convert promising starts into substantial partnerships as India's bowlers struck at regular intervals. Although England crossed the 250-run mark, India will be encouraged by restricting the innings to 258 before the full quota of 50 overs was completed.

India entered the ODI series with renewed confidence following the return of experienced campaigners Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, both of whom are now focusing exclusively on the 50-over format after retiring from T20 Internationals and Test cricket. Wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul also returned after recovering from injury, strengthening a batting lineup that had struggled for consistency during the preceding T20I leg of the tour.

The ODI series carries added significance for India after a disappointing T20I campaign in England. The visitors were whitewashed 2-0 by Ireland before suffering a comprehensive 4-0 series defeat against England, prompting questions over the team's form in English conditions. The return of senior players is expected to provide greater stability and experience as the team looks to rebuild momentum in the 50-over format.

With 259 required for victory, India's batting unit faces an important test against England's bowling attack. A successful chase would not only hand Shubman Gill's side an early advantage in the three-match series but also provide a timely confidence boost after recent setbacks. England, meanwhile, will aim to capitalise on home conditions and defend a competitive total to continue their winning run against India.
