The 37-year-old batter has been in sublime form, scoring five half-centuries or more in his last six matches, including two commanding centuries, reaffirming his status among the game’s greats.
However, celebrations were momentarily dampened when the ICC shared a social media graphic incorrectly stating that Kohli had spent only 825 days as the world’s top-ranked ODI batter. The post placed him 10th on the all-time list, a figure that immediately raised eyebrows among fans and cricket analysts familiar with ICC’s own historical data.
Social media users were quick to point out that Kohli had actually spent 1,547 days at the No. 1 position, as cited in multiple previous ICC records. Facing mounting criticism, the ICC deleted the original post and later corrected the information, confirming the accurate figure of 1,547 days at the top of the ODI rankings.

With the corrected data, Kohli now ranks third on the all-time list of most days spent as the No. 1 ODI batter. He trails only West Indies legends Sir Vivian Richards, who leads with 2,306 days, and Brian Lara with 2,079 days, further cementing Kohli’s place among cricket’s elite.
Kohli’s rise has been fuelled by a prolific run across international and domestic cricket. He struck two brilliant centuries against South Africa in December, followed by another hundred in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. He then opened India’s ODI series against New Zealand in January with a vital 93-run knock that guided the team to victory.
Now active primarily in the ODI format, Kohli’s consistency and hunger for runs continue to define his late-career resurgence. Despite the ICC’s momentary lapse, the episode ultimately highlighted both Kohli’s enduring legacy and the vigilance of fans who ensure cricketing records are accurately preserved.
