Gautam Gambhir Becomes Only India Head Coach to Win Two Major ICC Trophies as Coach

Gambhir's two ICC trophies as coach make him the most successful in Indian cricket history.

The tenure of Gautam Gambhir as head coach of the India national cricket team has been defined by both intense scrutiny and historic achievements. Taking charge in mid-2024, Gambhir stepped into one of the most demanding roles in world cricket, inheriting a team expected to win consistently across formats. While his time as coach has drawn criticism—especially following setbacks in Test cricket—it has also produced unprecedented success in global white-ball tournaments. 🏏

Gambhir made history by becoming the only Indian head coach to win two major ICC titles, guiding India to victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026. The achievements cemented his place among the most successful coaches in Indian cricket history. The triumph in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where Gambhir lifted the trophy alongside captain Suryakumar Yadav, symbolised the peak of his coaching journey so far.

Gambhir’s appointment followed the departure of Rahul Dravid, who stepped down after the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. At the time, there was no clear successor until Gambhir’s credentials strengthened after Kolkata Knight Riders secured a dominant victory in the Indian Premier League 2024 season. That campaign—considered one of the most dominant title runs in IPL history—helped propel Gambhir into the national coaching role.

Under Gambhir’s leadership, India adopted an ultra-aggressive style in T20 cricket. The shift in mindset was evident during the 2026 T20 World Cup, particularly in the semi-final clash against England national cricket team, where India posted 253 runs in 20 overs—then the highest total in a knockout match in the tournament’s history. Just days later, India raised the bar again by scoring 255 in the final against New Zealand national cricket team, showcasing the fearless approach that has defined Gambhir’s philosophy.

Beyond attacking cricket, Gambhir’s tactical instincts have played a major role in India’s success. One notable decision was promoting Axar Patel to No. 5 in the batting order during the Champions Trophy campaign, allowing KL Rahul to stabilise innings from a lower position. Another key move was including mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy in the ODI squad despite his reputation as a T20 specialist. The gamble paid off, with Chakravarthy finishing as one of India’s joint-highest wicket-takers in the tournament.

Gambhir has also emphasised a team-first culture, regularly highlighting the value of small contributions that often go unnoticed. After a crucial match against the West Indies cricket team, he praised Shivam Dube for a quick cameo despite Sanju Samson scoring a match-defining 97. According to Gambhir, those brief but decisive moments often shape the outcome of a game.

Reflecting on India’s 2026 World Cup victory, Gambhir humbly credited the players for the success. However, his achievements—surpassing the accomplishments of previous India coaches like Gary Kirsten, Ravi Shastri, and John Wright—have firmly placed him among the most influential figures in Indian cricket’s coaching history. With the next global tournaments on the horizon, Gambhir’s journey at the helm of Team India may still have many milestones ahead. 🏆
