Ganguly’s Warning to Gill’s India: “Too Early to Celebrate” Ahead of Lord’s Test

Sourav Ganguly praises India’s resilience but urges caution as they face England in the crucial third Test at Lord’s with the series tied 1-1

As India gears up for the third Test against England at Lord’s starting July 10, former captain Sourav Ganguly has voiced cautious optimism about the team’s prospects, warning that it’s “too early” to predict the series outcome despite their recent heroics. With the five-Test series locked at 1-1, Ganguly believes the lively Lord’s pitch could favor India, but emphasized the long road ahead.

Speaking to IANS on his birthday, Ganguly reflected on India’s rollercoaster campaign. After a five-wicket loss in the first Test at Leeds, where England chased 378, India roared back with a historic 336-run victory at Edgbaston—their first-ever Test win at the venue and India’s biggest overseas triumph by runs. “India has played well, but the next Test is a long way to go,” Ganguly said, acknowledging the team’s resilience.

India’s resurgence has been spearheaded by captain Shubman Gill, whose twin centuries (269 and 161) at Edgbaston yielded a staggering 430 runs, the second-highest match aggregate in Test history. Ganguly hailed Gill’s “phenomenal” performance, predicting a bright future but cautioning that the young skipper faces rising expectations. “Right now, it’s a honeymoon period. The tests will increase,” he noted.

Ganguly sees the Lord’s pitch offering India an edge, particularly for their batsmen and bowlers capable of taking 20 wickets. “It’s an equal advantage,” he said, stressing that both teams have a fair shot. As India aims to build on their Edgbaston triumph, Ganguly’s words serve as a reminder of the challenges awaiting Gill’s side in this pivotal clash.
