New Fielding Coach: Subhadeep Ghosh to Debut in Sri Lanka Tests

Subhadeep Ghosh has been appointed fielding coach of the Indian men’s cricket team and will begin his tenure during the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka starting on August 15. The Board of Control for Cricket in India selected Ghosh after deciding not to renew the contract of former fielding coach T Dilip, whose final assignment was the three-match T20 International series against Zimbabwe. Ghosh joins the setup as India undergoes a coaching transition following assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate’s departure after the white-ball series against England.

Ghosh brings experience as both a domestic cricketer and a coach. He represented Assam and Railways between 1994 and 2005, playing 17 first-class matches and 17 List A games. Across those 34 appearances, he scored 623 runs, including four half-centuries, and completed 16 catches. Although his playing career was relatively modest, his subsequent coaching work across domestic cricket, franchise tournaments and national development programmes helped him build a reputation as a specialist fielding coach.

His Indian Premier League experience includes working with Kolkata Knight Riders’ support staff when the franchise won the 2014 title under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy. He later served as fielding coach of Delhi Capitals. Ghosh also coached his home state of Assam and worked at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, where he was associated with India’s player-development system and worked alongside former national coaches Rahul Dravid and V V S Laxman.

Ghosh has also held important roles with India’s women’s and junior teams. He replaced Abhay Sharma as fielding coach of the Indian women’s side in 2021 and worked with leading players, including Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana. He remained associated with the team during the 2023 Asian Games and introduced structured drills intended to improve catching, movement and overall fielding standards. Earlier in 2026, he served as fielding coach of the Ayush Mhatre-led India Under-19 team that won the ICC Under-19 World Cup in South Africa.

His first assignment with the senior men’s team will carry significant importance because World Test Championship points will be available during the Sri Lanka series. The Shubman Gill-led side will expect Ghosh to strengthen its catching, close-in fielding and ground-fielding performance in conditions where individual chances can influence an entire Test match. His experience across men’s, women’s and youth cricket gives him a broad coaching background as he assumes one of the most closely scrutinised positions in the Indian support staff.
