Former Cricketers React to Pakistan's Boycott of India in the T20 World Cup
Afridi supports Gavaskar and predicts change, and Harbhajan warns of sanctions.
Reactions from the cricketing world have poured in after Pakistan announced it will boycott its group-stage match against India in the T20 World Cup 2026, scheduled for February 15. The decision, reportedly taken on the advice of the Pakistani government, has reignited debate over the intersection of politics and sport, especially in one of cricket’s most watched rivalries.
Pakistan has said the move was taken in solidarity with Bangladesh, who were excluded from the tournament by the ICC. However, several former players and experts have questioned the reasoning, accusing Pakistan of applying double standards while acknowledging the political pressures behind the call.
Former Pakistan stars Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Yousuf expressed regret over fans missing out on a marquee clash but backed their government’s decision. Afridi said cricket has often helped bridge political divides but added that the ICC must now prove its neutrality through action rather than statements. Yousaf echoed similar sentiments, saying principles must come before commercial interests in world cricket.

On the Indian side, former captain Sunil Gavaskar appeared sceptical about the boycott lasting long. He suggested Pakistan could yet reverse its stance, citing past instances where strong decisions were later rolled back under pressure from players and fans. Gavaskar said the global reaction to the boycott could force a rethink within days.
Former India spinner Harbhajan Singh warned of possible consequences, saying the ICC could impose sanctions or fines, and hinted that Pakistan’s chances of hosting future ICC events could be affected. World Cup winner Madan Lal was more blunt, stating that the decision would only hurt Pakistan’s own cricket and solve none of its problems.
India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin added a sarcastic take, questioning whether even a potential knockout clash between the two sides would now be ruled out, joking that it could turn into a “World T20 bye” for India. As the controversy grows, attention now turns to the ICC and whether the boycott will stand or be reconsidered in the coming days.
