Fans Expected a Legendary Line From Shastri but Got a Rare On-Air Commentary Blunder
Shastri miscounted wickets during India's T20 World Cup final win, disappointing expectant fans.
Ravi Shastri, a celebrated former cricketer and commentator, faced widespread disappointment during the final moments of the T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Known for his iconic commentary during the 2011 ODI World Cup, when he famously said, “MS Dhoni finishes off in style”, Shastri’s remarks in Sunday’s final failed to resonate with viewers.
As India wrapped up a dominant 96-run victory, Shastri mistakenly called Jacob Duffy’s wicket the ninth fall when it was, in fact, the 10th. He quickly corrected himself, announcing: “And it’s all done, actually. It’s India that wins the World Cup for the third time. The first team to win back-to-back World Cups and the first hosts to win the T20 World Cup on their home turf. It’s a fantastic performance for India.” Despite the correction, fans on social media expressed disappointment over the commentary lapse, highlighting the high expectations placed on Shastri’s live match analysis.
India’s victory was powered by a stellar bowling performance from Jasprit Bumrah, who returned figures of 4/15, reducing New Zealand to just 159 runs. With this win, India became the first team to retain the T20 World Cup title and claim the crown three times, following earlier ICC victories in the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados and the Champions Trophy against New Zealand. The win was celebrated by 86,824 fans, marking a historic moment for Indian cricket.

Head coach Gautam Gambhir praised his team’s approach, emphasising a philosophy of creating a legacy rather than inheriting it. “I don’t believe in inheriting anything. I believe in creating something, and hopefully we’ve created something that all of you can be proud of,” Gambhir said. He highlighted that the team’s fearless, proactive brand of cricket—consistently outscoring and outbowling opponents—was key to India’s sustained dominance over the past three years. The match and Shastri’s commentary quickly became a talking point, blending India’s record-breaking performance with the scrutiny fans expect from cricket’s most iconic voice.
